Abstract:

Background: Much attention has been paid to poultry feed processing and the contamination In Iran in order to improve the production and reduce the waste. No information is available on the fungal contamination and the strains found in processed (pellet) and non-processed (mash) poultry feeds. This study was designed to determine the hygienic condition and the risk of fungal contamination affecting the quality of poultry feeds (mashed vs. pellet). Methods: A total of 90 samples of poultry feeds were collected from warehouses in Tehran and Alborz provinces. Samples were cultured on SDA, the CFUs were calculated, and the taxonomic identification of various fungal genera was made, both macroscopically and microscopically. Results: Total mould counts for mashed feeds (15×103) was significantly (P<0.05) higher than pelleted feeds (11×102). The most frequent fungal genus recovered were Fusarium spp (90%) and Aspergillus spp (70%) in mashed and pellet feeds, respectively. Conclusion: Heat processing reduced fungal contamination in poultry feeds. However, some fungal species are able to survive heat exposure and continue to form spores. We concluded that the assessment of fungal contamination in poultry feeds deserves a high attention to improve the quality, hygiene and safety of the foods originated from poultry .

High Presence of Toxigenic Aspergillus spp. in Commercial Poultry Feeds in Ilaro, Nigeria

Background: Several health problems may be occurred due to consumption of mycotoxin-contaminated foods and feeds. The maize and oilseeds, as the main components of poultry feeds are susceptible to mould contamination and mycotoxin production. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of toxigenic Aspergillus spp. in poultry feeds from Ilaro, Nigeria. Methods: A total of 60 poultry fe...

Pellet Quality in Animal Feeds

Pelleting costs money, and better pellets cost a little more. Payback comes in the form of convenience in handling the feed and more efficient use of the feed by the animal. Improved efficiency is due in part to heat processing which reduces pathogens and makes starches more digestible. A significant portion of the improvement is related to the physical form of the pellet. Durable pellets reduc...

Fungal contamination of poultry litter: a public health problem.

Although numerous studies have been conducted on microbial contaminants associated with various stages related to poultry and meat products processing, only a few reported on fungal contamination of poultry litter. The goals of this study were to (1) characterize litter fungal contamination and (2) report the incidence of keratinophilic and toxigenic fungi presence. Seven fresh and 14 aged litt...

Bacterial contamination of enteral feeds.

Enteral nutrition is increasingly used to provide nutritional support for children in hospital and at home. No suitable formula is available for preschool children, however, and until recently a modular feed has been prepared. The hypotheses were examined that the use of a modular feed is associated with increased bacterial contamination, and that contamination is more common in the home than i...

Community Environmental Contamination of Toxigenic Clostridium difficile

BACKGROUND Clostridium difficile infection is often considered to result from recent acquisition of a C difficile isolate in a healthcare setting. However, C difficile spores can persist for long periods of time, suggesting a potentially large community environmental reservoir. The objectives of this study were to assess community environmental contamination of toxigenic C difficile and to asse...
